DESCRIPTION
Published from 1993 to 1994, 'Knightfall' is a significant Batman story arc written by Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench, and Alan Grant, with artwork by Jim Aparo, Norm Breyfogle, and Graham Nolan, among others. The storyline was published by DC Comics and spanned several Batman titles, including 'Batman,' 'Detective Comics,' and 'Batman: Shadow of the Bat.' The arc is renowned for introducing Bane, a formidable new villain who orchestrates a massive breakout at Arkham Asylum, releasing Batman's most dangerous adversaries. As Batman exhausts himself recapturing these villains, Bane confronts and defeats him, famously breaking Batman's back. This injury forces Bruce Wayne into temporary retirement, leading to Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, taking up the mantle of Batman. However, Valley's increasingly violent and unstable behavior as Batman becomes a central theme. The storyline explores themes of legacy, identity, and the psychological toll of being Batman. 'Knightfall' had a lasting impact on the Batman mythos, setting the stage for the 'Knightquest' and 'KnightsEnd' storylines, which detail Bruce Wayne's recovery and eventual return. The arc was critically acclaimed for its depth and complexity, and it remains a pivotal moment in Batman's history. The story spanned over 19 issues across the different series involved.
