1. What Cookies Are#

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Your browser sends them back to that site on each visit, which is how a site keeps you signed in or remembers a setting. Local storage is a similar store kept by your browser, except that its contents stay in the browser and are not sent to our servers with each request.

This policy covers the VerseDB website. Our iOS and Android apps do not use cookies, except on website pages you open inside them; what the apps collect, including advertising identifiers, is described in our Privacy Policy.

2. Cookies We Set#

Strictly Necessary#

These keep the site working and secure. They are always on and cannot be switched off in our cookie preferences.

  • versedb_session: identifies your session and keeps you signed in. It expires 30 days after your last visit.
  • XSRF-TOKEN: protects forms against cross-site request forgery. It expires 30 days after your last visit.
  • remember_web_…: set when you tick "Remember me" or sign in with Apple, Google, or Discord, so you stay signed in after the session ends. It lasts up to 400 days, or until you sign out.
  • versedb_consent: records your answer to the cookie banner. It lasts 365 days. See "How We Remember Your Choice" below.

If you have no cookies from us yet, some catalog pages load without setting any.

Preferences#

These remember choices you make. We set each one only after you make that choice.

  • vdb_theme: your light, dark, or system appearance setting. 365 days.
  • versedb_locale: the language you picked with a language link. 365 days.
  • vdb_mobile_ctx: marks pages opened from inside the VerseDB mobile app, so we don't show web payment links there. 24 hours.

Local Storage#

We also keep a few display settings in your browser's local storage. These include your cookie banner answer (vdb_consent), whether you paused animations and carousels, your comic reader settings, the size of the VerseAI chat panel, your recent GIF searches, and whether you dismissed the prompts to get the app or install the site. Session storage, which your browser clears when you close the tab, holds which pages you have viewed during the visit so the install prompt doesn't repeat. None of it identifies you, and clearing your browser's site data removes it.

3. Analytics Cookies#

Analytics cookies are off until you allow them. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how people use VerseDB, such as which pages and features they use and whether sign-ups and PRO purchases complete. Google Analytics sets:

  • _ga: a random ID that tells one browser from another. 2 years.
  • _ga_<ID>: keeps track of the current visit. 2 years.

We also send sign-up, checkout and purchase events to Google Analytics from our servers, and only when you have allowed analytics. They carry the _ga identifiers above so they count as part of the visit they happened in.

4. Advertising Cookies#

Advertising cookies are off until you allow them.

  • Meta Pixel: the Meta Pixel measures whether our ads on Facebook and Instagram lead to sign-ups, searches, and purchases. It sets _fbp, a browser ID that lasts 90 days, and _fbc, which stores the ad click that brought you here and also lasts 90 days. The server-side Conversions API sends the same events only when you have allowed advertising.
  • Google AdSense: AdSense is not running on VerseDB at present, so it sets no cookies. If we turn it on, it will run only for signed-out visitors and non-PRO members who allow advertising, and we will update this policy when we do. PRO subscribers never see ads.

5. Other Services That May Set Cookies#

Some features load another company's code or media. Those services may set or read cookies under their own policies. These features are part of the service you asked for, so they are not covered by the banner:

  • Stripe: on payment pages, Stripe sets __stripe_mid and __stripe_sid to detect card fraud.
  • Google sign-in: signed-out visitors may see Google's one-step sign-in prompt. If you close it, Google stores g_state so it stops asking for a while. Google may also read the cookies it already holds for your Google account.
  • Cloudflare: Cloudflare delivers the site and runs Turnstile, the check on sign-up, sign-in, and some other forms. When its bot protection checks a browser, it can set __cf_bm or cf_clearance.
  • Google Maps and Klipy: the comic shop finder loads Google Maps, and GIFs in comments load from Klipy. Both come from those companies' own servers, which may set cookies on their own domains.

6. Managing Cookies#

To change your analytics and advertising choices, use the Cookie Preferences controls at the top of this page. They work whether or not you have an account. If you are signed in, the same choices are in your Privacy Settings.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block strictly necessary cookies, you cannot sign in and some forms will not submit. The rest of the site works without analytics or advertising cookies.

How We Remember Your Choice#

Whether we ask for your consent depends on the country you are visiting from, which we work out from your IP address. We use it only to decide whether to show the consent banner.

Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel do not run, and set no cookies, until you have answered the banner or we have confirmed that you are visiting from a country where consent is not required.

If you are not signed in, your answer is kept in your browser's local storage under the name vdb_consent. It holds your two choices and the time you made them, and nothing that identifies you. Once your browser has a session cookie from us, the same answer is also saved in a cookie named versedb_consent, which lasts 365 days. That cookie belongs to versedb.com and its subdomains, so the same answer holds on VerseDB Studio (studio.versedb.com) and our other dashboards, which show the same banner and save your answer in the same cookie. If you are signed in, it is saved to your account as well, so it follows you between devices.

Clearing your browser's site data removes the stored answer, and we will ask again on your next visit.

7. Updates to This Policy#

We update this policy when we add or remove a cookie or change how we use one. We will tell you about material changes through:

  • Site notifications
  • Email notifications (for registered users)
  • The "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy
