Karl Lykos is a physician bitten by mutant pterodactyls as a boy, left needing to drain the life force of others to live. Draining a mutant turns him into Sauron, a humanoid pterodactyl. Roy Thomas and Neal Adams built the X-Men villain in 1969 around the Code's ban on werewolves.
