In Peyo's Johan and Peewit, a medieval adventure strip that began in Spirou in 1947, Johan is a young squire serving a benevolent king, partnered with the boastful jester Peewit. The series is also the reason the Smurfs exist, since they arrived in the 1958 story The Smurfs and the Magic Flute.
