Pen name of Japanese manga artist Masanori Ota, born in 1961 in Kobe, known for densely plotted science fiction manga dealing with cybernetics, artificial intelligence, and the nature of human consciousness. His debut work Appleseed won the Seiun Award for Best Manga in 1986. He is best known internationally for Ghost in the Shell, which has been adapted into multiple anime films and series and was cited as an influence on the Matrix films.
