Ed is a regular geek at Chesterton High when an alien sociologist named Nod arrives on Earth on behalf of the Council of Galaxies, looking for a human worthy to receive the power of the Right. Ed gets the gift by accident, and what looks like invincibility turns out to be a brutally high pain tolerance with no other powers attached. His classmate Lance Lundgrin is not happy about being passed over.
