The Beano (1938)
SeriesDescription
The Beano is a British weekly anthology comic published by D.C. Thomson, first released on 30 July 1938. Based in Dundee, Scotland, D.C. Thomson designed it around short-format humour strips aimed at children, drawing on the American newspaper comic tradition rather than the text-heavy story papers common at the time.
The comic's roster of characters has shifted over its long run, but several have become icons of British children's comics. Dennis the Menace, introduced in 1951, has held the cover spot for decades. Other long-running strips include The Bash Street Kids, Minnie the Minx, Roger the Dodger, and Billy Whizz.
The Beano published its 4,000th issue in 2019 and remains one of the longest-running weekly comics in the world.
