Pluto is Mickey Mouse's loyal canine companion, created at Walt Disney in 1930. First appearing in the animated short The Chain Gang, he was initially named Rover before being established as Mickey's pet under the name Pluto in The Moose Hunt (1931). He is one of the few Disney characters who is not anthropomorphized beyond expressive facial features, remaining a realistically portrayed dog who cannot speak or walk upright. His comics debut followed in the Mickey Mouse newspaper strip later in 1931.
