Bananaman first appeared in the DC Thomson anthology Nutty in 1980. He is really Eric Wimp, a schoolboy who gains superhuman strength and the ability to fly by eating a banana, turning into a muscular costumed adult. He moved to Beano in 1986, and a BBC cartoon widened his audience.
