Japanese animator and manga artist born in 1947 in Hokkaido who began his career at Osamu Tezuka's Mushi Productions before becoming the character designer and animation director for Mobile Suit Gundam. He transitioned to full-time manga in 1989 and is known for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, a ten-year serialization that sold over 10 million copies and received the 2012 Seiun Award.
