Kat Howard is an American writer of fantasy, science fiction, and horror based in New Hampshire. Before her writing career, she worked as a college professor and competitive fencer. She attended the Clarion Writers Workshop, where Neil Gaiman was one of her instructors.
Howard's debut novel Roses and Rot (2016) was selected by Publishers Weekly as the Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror Novel of Summer 2016 and was a Locus Award finalist. Her second novel, An Unkindness of Magicians, won the Alex Award. In comics, she wrote the first 18 issues of The Books of Magic for DC's Sandman Universe line, continuing the story of Timothy Hunter originally created by Gaiman. Her novella The End of the Sentence, co-written with Maria Dahvana Headley, was named one of NPR's best books of 2014.
