Self-published comics are created, produced, and distributed directly by creators without a traditional publisher. This approach gives artists and writers full creative and financial control over their work, though it requires handling all aspects of production from art to printing to marketing.

Many self-published creators sell through conventions, personal websites, or crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter. Digital distribution through services like Webtoon, Tapas, and GlobalComix has expanded reach for independent creators in recent years.

Several major comics began as self-published projects. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started as a black-and-white indie comic by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984. Bone by Jeff Smith, Cerebus by Dave Sim, and Love and Rockets by the Hernandez brothers all launched independently before gaining wider recognition.

Self-published works are typically the sole property of their creators, offering maximum freedom but requiring creators to manage both the artistic and business sides of comics production. Modern crowdfunding has made this path more viable for independent creators worldwide.
