Fawcett Publications was an American publishing company founded in 1919 in Robbinsdale, Minnesota by Wilford Hamilton "Captain Billy" Fawcett.
The company started with the humor magazine Captain Billy's Whiz Bang and expanded into magazines including Mechanix Illustrated, True Confessions, Family Circle, Woman's Day, and True. Fawcett Comics began operating in 1939 and introduced Captain Marvel. The company started publishing paperbacks in 1950 through Gold Medal Books.
In 1953, Fawcett abandoned its superhero comics following declining sales and a lawsuit alleging Captain Marvel infringed on Superman's copyright. The company was purchased by CBS Publications in 1977 and subsequently absorbed by other companies.
