Martha Wayne, born Martha Kane, was a Gotham City socialite and heiress to the Kane Chemical fortune who married physician Thomas Wayne. She is primarily known as the mother of Bruce Wayne, whose murder alongside her husband in a street robbery became the defining tragedy that inspired Bruce to become Batman. She first appeared in Detective Comics #33 in 1939, in the original account of Batman's origin.
