Peter Parker begins graduate work at Empire State University on a modest research grant, still selling photographs to the Daily Bugle to cover the bills. His new post places him in Doctor Evan Swann's laboratory beside fellow assistant Anne Marie Baker, and Swann's locked private room and off budget equipment orders keep tripping his spider sense.
Killer Shrike is robbing armored cars in broad daylight, and the mercenary gets away after Spider-Man interrupts one of the holdups. Returning to the campus at night, Peter finds that someone has been using university facilities to build weapons technology, and Shrike is not the only criminal working the building.
