Gnasher first appeared in The Beano #1362 in 1968 as the pet dog of Dennis the Menace. He is an Abyssinian Wire-Haired Tripe Hound, a made-up breed, all shaggy black fur with only his eyes and teeth showing. He grunts rather than barks, and Dennis found him as a stray.
