Bessy
Description
Bessy is a Belgian comics character created by Willy Vandersteen and Karel Verschuere in 1952. The series was inspired by the popularity of the Lassie franchise, though Vandersteen created an original character after MGM insisted on strict adaptations of their property.
Bessy is a female collie set in the American Wild West, owned by a young man named Andy Cayoon. Together they have adventures involving cowboys, Native Americans, and frontier life. Unlike many children's comics of the era, the series did not feature child protagonists, instead focusing on western action and adventure.
The series ran until 1997, with approximately 992 albums produced exclusively for the German market, where it was particularly popular. Bessy was also translated into Dutch, French, and Swedish. Along with Suske en Wiske and De Rode Ridder, it was one of Vandersteen's most commercially successful properties.
