Felix the Cat is a cartoon character created in 1919 by Otto Messmer, produced under the banner of Pat Sullivan, during the silent film era. An anthropomorphic black cat with expressive white eyes, he is considered the first fully developed recurring animal character in American film animation. Felix became a global phenomenon in the 1920s and appeared in a newspaper comic strip beginning in 1923. He has been published in comics by numerous companies across more than a century, remaining one of the most recognized cartoon characters in history.
