Hal Foster
Biography
Hal Foster (1892-1982) was a Canadian-born American cartoonist regarded as a pioneer of the adventure comic strip. He adapted Tarzan into a syndicated strip in 1929, then created Prince Valiant for King Features in 1937, a rare deal that let him keep ownership of his work. Prince Valiant used captions rather than speech balloons, rendered in a detailed, painterly style. He is often called the father of the adventure strip and was inducted into the Eisner Hall of Fame in 1996.
