Joe and the Refugees
The series reaches back past its own cryptid for older Pine Barrens history. Joe Mulliner was a real Revolutionary War era outlaw hanged in 1781, and the comic puts him and his Refugees in the woods as spirits, a bandit gang remembered locally in Robin Hood terms. J.D. finds himself sharing his territory with them, which is the first time the legend he impersonates has had company with a claim as old as his.
