The anthology opens with Darth Vader rendered in black and white, red the only accent color. Jason Aaron comes back to Star Wars with Hard Shutdown Part 1, drawn by Leonard Kirk, the opening chapter of a story that continues through all four issues.
Peach Momoko writes and draws Inescapable, a dialogue-free tale of a woman haunted by Vader in her dreams. In Torunn Grønbekk and Klaus Janson's Dissolution of Hope, Vader arrives at an Imperial base to look into a troubled weapons project while rebels plot a strike of their own.
