Description

Issue 1072 of the weekly Spirou magazine, dated October 1958, is remembered as the debut of the Smurfs. The small blue creatures, led by the red-clad Papa Smurf, first appeared as supporting figures in Peyo's Johan and Peewit serial 'La Flute a six trous,' in which the heroes search for an enchanted flute. Intended as one-time bit players, the Smurfs drew such a strong reader response that Dupuis soon gave them their own stories. The issue also carried ongoing Spirou and Fantasio adventures featuring Marsupilami.
