The Savage Sword of Conan (1974)
Description
Marvel's black-and-white magazine featuring Robert E. Howard's legendary barbarian. Published by Curtis Magazines (a Marvel imprint), the oversized format freed the series from Comics Code restrictions, allowing for more violent action and mature storytelling than the color Conan the Barbarian comic.
Roy Thomas served as editor and primary writer for the first 60 issues, adapting Howard's original stories with artwork from Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, Alfredo Alcala, Neal Adams, and others. The series debuted with Windsor-Smith's adaptation of "The Frost Giant's Daughter" and presented landmark adaptations including "Red Nails" and "A Witch Shall Be Born."
Running 235 issues from 1974 to 1995, it became the longest-surviving title of the Curtis imprint.
