Brian Wood's Vertigo series tells standalone stories set across the Viking Age, each following a different protagonist in a different time and place. Rather than romanticize the era, Wood grounds it in politics, survival, and brutal personal stakes. The opening arc follows Sven, an exiled warrior returning from the Byzantine guard to the Orkney Islands to claim his inheritance.
