Howling Commandos
The Howling Commandos are Marvel's WWII-era Army Ranger unit created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos (1963). Led in the field by Sgt. Nick Fury under Captain Sam Sawyer's command, the squad -- including strongman Dum Dum Dugan, mechanic Izzy Cohen, and bugler Gabe Jones -- fought through Europe and North Africa before Fury's wartime service carried him into the O.S.S. and eventually the leadership of S.H.I.E.L.D.
