Shorty is a small, bespectacled sailor introduced as Popeye's comic foil in the Famous Studios cartoons of the 1940s and built around the actor Arnold Stang. He panics easily and hides behind Popeye once a fight starts. The character carried over into the licensed Popeye comic books.
