Billy DeBeck launched Barney Google in 1919, a short, cigar-chewing gambler with banjo eyes, and the strip exploded when Barney acquired a racehorse called Spark Plug in 1922. DeBeck's slang seeded heebie-jeebies and horsefeathers into everyday English. Barney met a hillbilly named Snuffy Smith.
