American cartoonist (1920-1975) who created Archie for MLJ's Pep Comics in 1941 and drew the character's first solo title in 1942, basing the strip's cast on his own days at Haverhill High School. Served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, then from 1946 wrote and drew the syndicated Archie newspaper strip for nearly three decades, running the daily and Sunday feature in more than 750 papers worldwide until his death in 1975.
