American cartoonist and writer (1914-1993) who began his career selling freelance gag cartoons in New York before becoming the writer, and often artist, of Little Lulu comic book stories for Dell Comics from 1945 to 1959, penning more than 6,000 pages of Lulu and Tubby material. A former Max Fleischer Studios animator, Stanley developed Tubby Tompkins into one of the medium's most complex characters and is regarded as one of the era's most consistently funny cartoonists.
