American comic book artist who worked prolifically at Atlas Comics, the 1950s predecessor to Marvel Comics, where he became a particular favorite of editor Stan Lee. He co-created several enduring characters including the Black Knight, the Ringo Kid, and the Yellow Claw, working across genres from Westerns to horror to romance. His career was cut short when he died in 1958 at age 32 following an accident on a commuter train.
