Biography

Rumiko Takahashi is a Japanese manga artist born in Niigata. She debuted in 1975 at age 18 and quickly rose to prominence with her first major serialization, Urusei Yatsura, in 1978.

Her career spans several long-running, commercially successful series. Maison Ikkoku (1980), Ranma 1/2 (1987), and Inuyasha (1996) each ran for years in Weekly Shonen Sunday and were adapted into popular anime. Her most recent long-running work, MAO, continued the pattern of supernatural action mixed with humor and romance.

Takahashi's manga have sold over 230 million copies worldwide, making her one of the best-selling authors of all time. She received the Shogakukan Manga Award twice, for Urusei Yatsura in 1980 and Inuyasha in 2001. In 2020, the Japanese government awarded her the Medal with Purple Ribbon for contributions to the arts.
