Japanese manga writer born in 1936 who trained under Golgo 13 creator Takao Saito. Koike is best known for writing Lone Wolf and Cub (1970–1976), a landmark samurai series illustrated by Goseki Kojima. He also wrote Crying Freeman with artist Ryoichi Ikegami and founded the Gekiga Sonjuku school, whose graduates include Rumiko Takahashi and Tetsuo Hara. He died in April 2019.
