American cartoonist born August 23, 1905, died August 15, 1982. He is best known for the long-running newspaper comic strip Nancy, for which he introduced the title character in 1933. His distinctive minimalist style attracted critical admiration, and he won the Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society in 1976.
