R2-D2 is an astromech droid and one of the central recurring characters of the Star Wars franchise, first appearing in Marvel Comics' Star Wars #1 (1977), written by Roy Thomas with art by Howard Chaykin. A compact cylindrical robot communicating through electronic beeps and whistles, he serves as a loyal companion to the saga's heroes and repeatedly carries or delivers information critical to the story's events. He appears throughout Marvel's original Star Wars comic run and its later adaptations.
