Alfred E. Neuman
CharacterDescription
Alfred E. Neuman is the fictitious mascot of Mad, the American humor magazine, whose gap-toothed, freckled, carefree face first appeared under that name in Mad #21 (1955). The underlying image predates the magazine by decades, with similar faces appearing in late 19th-century advertising. Artist Norman Mingo refined the character's definitive look in 1956, and he subsequently appeared on nearly every Mad cover accompanied by his signature catchphrase 'What, Me Worry?' He became one of the most recognized fictional faces in American popular culture.
