Wimpy
CharacterDescription
J. Wellington Wimpy is a supporting character in E.C. Segar's Thimble Theatre newspaper strip, introduced in 1931 and closely associated with Popeye. Portrayed as a heavyset, soft-spoken gentleman in a tuxedo and derby hat, he is defined by his obsessive love of hamburgers and his persistent habit of deferring payment with vague promises. His catchphrase, "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today," became a widely recognized expression of genial financial avoidance and remains one of the most quoted lines from classic newspaper comics.
