Nathan's death and a close call with Hobgoblin's gas have Peter anxious about what Spider-Man is costing the people he loves. A Doctor Turner petitions J. Jonah Jameson for access to the wall crawler, saying he wants to study those powers for the public good.

Spider-Man volunteers and submits to the machine, and finds that it can take his abilities away. A routine appearance at JFK to greet a visiting ambassador turns into an ambush by the Femme Fatales, and a distracted Spider-Man barely walks out of it.
