Iron Man follows Tony Stark, the head of Stark Industries and a brilliant weapons designer who keeps himself alive with a chest device of his own making. In secret he operates as the armored hero Iron Man, using a suit he constantly rebuilds and improves.
Running from 1968 to 1996, the original ongoing expanded Stark from a Cold War inventor into one of Marvel's most complex leads. Alongside the technology and the super-villain threats, the run gave real weight to his private struggles, most notably his battle with alcoholism.
Recurring figures include his confidant James Rhodes, longtime associates Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan, and persistent foes such as the Mandarin, Justin Hammer, and Obadiah Stane. Arcs like Demon in a Bottle and Armor Wars questioned the cost of Stark's power and who has the right to wield his designs.
