Academy X refers to the expanded Xavier Institute for Higher Learning as reorganized by co-headmasters Cyclops and Emma Frost in the wake of Xorn's attack on the X-Mansion, restructuring mutant education around practical, squad-based training. Students are grouped into competitive training squads of roughly four to seven members, each guided by a teacher-adviser, emphasizing teamwork, combat simulation, and control of their abilities in preparation for the possibility of joining the X-Men. The name doubles as the title of the ongoing series chronicling this generation of young mutants -- including Wind Dancer, Prodigy, Surge, Elixir, Wallflower, and Icarus -- as they navigate school life alongside the dangers of being mutants in a hostile world. The Institute and its student body remain central to the X-Men's youth-training efforts until the school's eventual closure.
