Hawkman is a DC Comics superhero most associated with the identity of Carter Hall, an archaeologist and reincarnated Egyptian prince who discovered an ancient belt of ninth metal enabling flight. Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Dennis Neville, Hawkman first appeared in Flash Comics #1 (1940) as a founding member of the Justice Society of America. He wields ancient weapons in combat and is often accompanied by Hawkgirl. A mythology of recurring reincarnation across centuries remains central to his modern portrayal in comics.
