Joe Palooka is the heavyweight boxing champion protagonist of the long-running American comic strip created by Ham Fisher, which debuted on April 19, 1930. A good-natured, physically powerful, and unassuming hero, Palooka became one of the most recognizable comic characters of his era, appearing in up to 900 newspapers at peak syndication. The strip spawned a CBS radio series, twelve feature films, a television series, and an extensive Harvey Comics run. Fisher devised the character in the early 1920s after meeting a boxer in his Pennsylvania hometown.
