Scarecrow
Description
The Scarecrow is a DC Comics supervillain created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. He first appeared in World's Finest Comics #3 (1941) as one of Batman's most psychologically menacing adversaries.
Dr. Jonathan Crane is a former professor of psychology at Gotham University who was obsessed with the study of fear. Fired for his unethical experiments and erratic behavior, Crane adopted the identity of the Scarecrow to terrorize Gotham City using a potent fear toxin that causes victims to hallucinate their worst nightmares.
Crane's own relationship with fear is complex. Bullied and abused as a child, he became fascinated by the mechanisms of terror and dedicated his academic career to understanding phobias. His Scarecrow persona allows him to weaponize that knowledge. The fear toxin is his signature weapon, typically delivered as a gas, though the exact chemical composition varies across stories.
The Scarecrow is a recurring member of Batman's rogues gallery and has appeared in numerous adaptations. His storylines often explore the line between clinical psychology and madness, making him one of the more thematically rich villains in the Batman mythos.
