Gnasher
Description
Gnasher is a British comics character who first appeared in issue #1362 of The Beano in 1968. He is the pet dog of Dennis the Menace and one of the most iconic characters in British comics.
Gnasher is an Abyssinian Wire-Haired Tripe Hound, a fictional breed, recognizable by his shaggy black fur that obscures everything except his eyes and teeth. He communicates by grunting "gnash!" instead of barking and has a fondness for chewing and biting anything in reach. Dennis found him as a stray and the two became inseparable partners in mischief.
Gnasher reached national news coverage in the 1980s when he disappeared from the magazine for seven weeks, eventually returning with six newborn puppies. His son Gnipper became a recurring character. The strip has alternated between the titles Dennis the Menace, Dennis the Menace and Gnasher, and Dennis and Gnasher, reflecting the dog's status as a co-star rather than a mere sidekick.
