Uzumaki (1998)
Uzumaki is Junji Ito's horror manga set in Kurouzu-cho, a seaside town gradually consumed by a supernatural curse tied to spiral shapes. Teenager Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi watch neighbors become obsessed with, then physically warped by, spirals in escalating body-horror episodes. Ito builds dread through cumulative small-town dread rather than a single antagonist, drawing on Lovecraftian cosmic horror.
