The VerseDB app can identify a comic from its barcode or from a photo of its cover, then add it to your collection. Open Scan from the menu, or tap the camera icon at the top of your Collection.
Scanning a barcode#
Tap Scan a barcode and hold the camera over the barcode, and the app looks the comic up as soon as it reads the code. You can also upload a photo of a barcode you already took, or type the code in by hand. Switch the code type to ISBN for trade paperbacks and graphic novels.
Modern comics usually carry a 5-digit add-on next to the main barcode, and that add-on is what tells one issue from the next. If the camera only catches the main barcode, the app asks for the issue number printed on the cover and finds the issue from that.
When several issues share a code, the app lists them and you pick yours. If nothing matches, choose Know this comic? Link the barcode, then find the series and issue and submit it. A moderator reviews the link before the barcode is added.
Scanning a stack#
Turn on Scan a stack in the camera to keep scanning book after book without leaving the viewfinder. When you are done, open the review list, check each match, and add them all to your collection at once.
Scanning a cover (PRO)#
For a comic with no barcode, tap Scan a cover to take a photo, or Upload a cover to use one from your library. The app reads the title, issue number and publisher from the cover and shows the best match, or a short list to choose from. Photos can be up to 5MB.
Variant covers that share the same art are hard to tell apart in a photo. When the app can't settle which cover you have, it offers to scan the barcode to pin down the exact one.
Graded books and slab labels#
If the comic is in a CGC, CBCS, PGX or PSA slab, photograph it with the label in frame and the app reads the label along with the cover. The match shows what it read, such as "Read from the slab: CGC 9.8", and its button changes to Add graded copy.
Tap it and the add form opens on the Grading tab with these fields filled in from the label:
Anything the app couldn't read clearly is left blank. Nothing is saved until you tap Save, so check each field against the label and correct anything that's off before you do.
Shoot the slab straight on, with no glare across the label, so the grade and certification number can be read.
Recording Condition and Grading Details explains what each grading field means.
