Mary Batson is Mary Marvel, the twin sister of Captain Marvel's alter ego Billy Batson and a member of the Marvel Family, first appearing in Captain Marvel Adventures #18 in 1942. Created by Otto Binder and Marc Swayze for Fawcett Comics, she gains her powers by speaking the magic word "Shazam," transforming into a superpowered heroine matching her brother's abilities. She has appeared in DC Comics publications since the company acquired Fawcett's characters and remains a member of the Shazam family.
