Spirou (1938)
Le Journal de Spirou launched on April 21, 1938, published weekly by Dupuis from Marcinelle, Belgium. The anthology presents serialized bande dessinee adventures, humor strips, and short gag comics.
The magazine takes its name from Spirou, a bellboy character created by Rob-Vel for the first issue. German occupation of Belgium in 1940 halted publication, creating gaps that continued sporadically through 1945. The title was officially shortened to Spirou in May 1947, when issue numbering also shifted from an annual to a sequential format.
Across its run the magazine has serialized prominent Franco-Belgian series including Spirou et Fantasio, Gaston Lagaffe, and Lucky Luke. It continues weekly publication under Dupuis.
