X-Man '96 (1996)
X-Man '96 is the first annual spun off from Marvel's X-Man ongoing, published as a single oversized one-shot at the end of 1996. It arrived at a point when Nate Grey, the telepathic refugee from the Age of Apocalypse, had spent roughly a year adrift in the mainstream Marvel Universe with no fixed home and no clear route back. The annual uses its extra page count to send him the other way: a pursuit of the Sugar Man opens a door to the reality he came from, and the book turns into a short return visit to the timeline that made him.
Terry Kavanagh, then writing the monthly, shares the lead story with Alan Davis, whose pencils are the issue's real draw and whose wraparound art fronts it. A backup feature by Ralph Macchio and Terry Dodson steps away from Nate entirely to follow Madelyne Pryor and the telepath Tessa, picking at the loose ends left by Madelyne's return.
Marvel followed it with X-Man '97 and then X-Man / Incredible Hulk '98, making this the opening entry in a short line of annuals attached to the series.
