Popeye's primary rival is Bluto, a massive, brutish sailor who perpetually schemes to steal Olive Oyl away from him. He first appeared in E.C. Segar's Thimble Theatre newspaper strip on September 12, 1932, and was later renamed Brutus in some television adaptations due to licensing complications.
