Olive Oyl
CharacterDescription
Olive Oyl is a cartoon character created by E. C. Segar for his comic strip Thimble Theatre, debuting on December 19, 1919. Originally the lead female character and love interest of the strip's protagonist Ham Gravy, she became the romantic partner of Popeye the Sailor after his introduction in 1929 and the strip's eventual renaming. She is visually characterized by her extremely slender build, long black hair, and angular features. Olive Oyl predates Popeye by a full decade, making her one of the earliest regularly appearing female protagonists in newspaper comics.
